Chapter Eleven

The scents of coffee and frying sausage woke Sam the next morning. Opening his eyes, he discovered that he was alone in his bed. He surmised that Lucy must be cooking breakfast as he stretched. Rising from the bed, he dressed in an older pair of black trousers and a gray shirt. He combed his hair and headed for the kitchen. His stomach rumbled as the smell of food grew stronger.

Entering the kitchen, he saw Lucy stirring some kind of batter in a bowl. She caught sight of him and the smile that lit her face made his heartbeat throb in his chest. She’d pulled her hair back on the sides, but otherwise, it cascaded down her back. The memory of how silky it felt when he’d buried his fingers in the gorgeous locks hit Sam like a hammer and he wanted to drag her back to bed.

“Good morning,” she greeted him. “Did you sleep well?”

The mischievous sparkle in her eyes made Sam laugh. “I certainly did. How about you?”

“Very well, indeed.” She went to the stove where a second frying pan sat. “How many pancakes would you like?”

Sam’s mouth watered as he looked at the other pan that contained browned sausage links. “I’ll start with four and go from there.”

Lucy started pouring batter into the frying pan. “I’m glad you have a good appetite. I’m used to cooking for a lot of people.”

Sam came over and filled his coffee cup from the pot. “Well, I’ll do my best to keep you in practice for when we have a big family of our own.”

Lucy smiled up at him. “Aye. I don’t think I’ll forget how to since I’ll be cooking for the ranch hands, too.”

A confused frown settled on Sam’s features. “For the ranch hands?”

Lucy nodded. “I understand that it’s my responsibility to cook for them, and I’m sure they’ll be glad for some good food instead of the things they make for themselves.”

Sam wasn’t aware that Lucy knew so much about the ranch hands. He realized that he had little idea what the men ate. Gray was a fairly competent cook, and he often made a meal for him and Sam. “You’re planning to cook for them?”

“Of course. Don’t other ranch wives feed the men?”

Sam took a sip of coffee and smiled at how good it tasted. It was much better than his. He got back to the matter at hand. “Who told you that?”

Lucy glanced at him before flipping a pancake. “Greta and Jenny. You don't seem to approve of the idea.”

Her tone made Sam tread carefully. The last thing he wanted was to argue the morning after their wedding. “It's just that we don't have a cookhouse.”

His mouth watered as she placed a big stack of pancakes and sausage on a plate. “Not yet, but our table is plenty big enough since we only have four hands. We can build a cookhouse later when we have more money, but for now, they can eat here.”
